Local 638 — $80/hr on the check next contract?

For those in 638 or familiar with the contract, do you think there’s a realistic chance we get to $80/hr on the check during the next contract?
Not talking total package — actual hourly wage/vacation on the check.

Curious what everyone thinks based on where wages are now and how the recent allocations have gone.

When does Engineering have too much control over the roadmap?

Curious how other PMs handle this.

On my team, Product sets business priorities, but Engineering has increasingly become the deciding voice on what gets picked up, sequencing, sprint scope, and ultimately delivery dates.

I completely understand that Engineering owns estimates, feasibility and technical constraints. My issue is when “we don’t have capacity” or “this will take X months” ends the conversation rather than starting one about scope, tradeoffs, dependencies, or an MVP.

I find myself pushing back and asking those questions more than others on the Product side, and sometimes feel like I’m fighting the battle alone.

How does this work on your teams? Where’s the line between appropriately challenging Engineering and Product overstepping?

Daycare told me my 3-year-old isn’t ready for underwear… am I wrong for being frustrated?

I’m looking for some perspective from other parents because I left daycare this morning feeling really discouraged.
My son just turned 3 and we started potty training this weekend. We spent the whole weekend doing underwear at home, and honestly he did really well. He had some accidents (which I expected), but he was going on the potty, starting to recognize when he had to go, and even told me while an accident was happening. I felt like he was making progress and I didn’t want to go backwards.
This morning at drop-off I told his teacher, “Just letting you know, he’s in underwear now.” She immediately said she didn’t think he was ready and suggested putting him back in a pull-up.
What bothered me was that he has never actually tried underwear at daycare before, so she hasn’t really seen how he does in that environment. He has always been in diapers/pull-ups there. When he moved into this classroom, we came in with diapers and the daycare told us to switch him to pull-ups because they were easier for the classroom routine, so we followed their direction.
The part that really frustrated me was that she said we shouldn’t have put him in pull-ups if we weren’t actively potty training because now he doesn’t associate that pull-up shouldn’t be used for peeing. But we switched to pull-ups because that’s what the daycare asked us to do. It felt frustrating to be told we created a habit that was actually encouraged by the daycare.
She also didn’t ask how he was doing at home or how many accidents he was having before saying he wasn’t ready. It felt like a firm decision rather than a conversation about how we could work together.
I completely understand daycare has multiple kids and accidents can be challenging. I’m not expecting them to do all the work, but I was hoping we could send extra clothes, have reminders, and give him a chance to practice.
Am I being overly sensitive? Would this bother you too? How did you handle the transition from pull-ups to underwear at daycare?

Unpopular opinion: don't see the need for BAs anymore

They way BAs function on the team i'm on is they basically are just ticket writers for user stories they will do analysis work if specially asked but i don't find them delving into the details and coming up with use cases edge cases or being creative at all. I also feel like Rovo in jira can do all their work in a fraction of the time and can even query other teams requirements and summarize if we're trying to understand how other things work for integration purposes. i'm finding myself going to rovo to do these things rather then the BAs and finding i'm becoming more efficient as a PM because im not waiting forever for these things to be done abd relying on them to explain It and sometimes is wrong. I also like that now im in the weeds and at a more strategic role which i'm kind of liking. Maybe i just don't have strong BAs but i feel like this model works way better in the age of AI. Thoughts?

Local 1 Application Status

Logged in today and saw my application went from submitted status to interview schedulable. I have previously taken an EIAT and passed from the covid recruitment timeframe. Does this mean i'd be passed through to interview or still need to wait for an EIAT test date

Local 638 selling us short. Our wages are not increasing over 15 years like others. What is going on even wage increases have been so small and total package isn't growing like others

Anyone here move from 638 to local 1?

Has anyone made the jump from 638 steamfitters to local 1 elevators? If so is the grass really greener? I know 638 is a great union but i always hear local 1 is the pinnacle of nyc building trades and would love to hear any first hand experience.

local 1 work

does anyone know if construction work is slow for local 1 or are most guys on mods? and do most guys get placed on mod/service side from apprenticeship or is there a good chance you can get into construction? I know everyone see's construction rates and think that's their path but i'm trying to understand how likely that is in today's NYC landscape.

Local 638 Wages Not Increasing

I feel like 638 contract negotiations never result in actual wage increases how have we been stuck at 61.80 for 6 years. I understand dollars are going elsewhere in benefits but It would nice to get a few dollar bump like other unions do. Is 638 historically not good with wage increases?
