Gloss lightened my natural hair

I have dark brown hair. Last November, I went in for a haircut, and the hairdresser convinced me to do a hair gloss to kind of sort of color my grays. It worked fine, and my grays had a deep violet "pop" to them. The color didn't last long, but it was only $20, and I knew it wasn't permanent, so it was no big deal. That was the first time any kind of dye touched my hair in 20 years.

I went back in May for another cut and again decided to do the same gloss. Well, the next day, my hair was noticeably lighter but I seriously thought I was going crazy because it didn't do that the time before, and I knew it wasn't meant to touch my base color. I seriously just thought maybe it was me. Stupidly, I didn't go back in to discuss my concerns. Now, two months later, it's growing out visibly, and I really hate it.

I have hair down to my hips and don't want to wait years for it to grow out. What needs to be done to get my hair back to my natural color without having to go back in for any touch ups? I assume a permanent all over color? What specifically should I ask for?

For some reason, I can not attach a picture to this post. I will try to do it in a comment.
