Anyone else feel like their brain keeps running background processes after work?

Not sure if this is a software dev thing or just me.

Lately I noticed even after I close my laptop and finish for the day, my brain doesn't actually stop.

Random bugs pop back into my head. Things I forgot to do. Ideas for cleaner solutions. Conversations from standups. Stuff I wasn't even thinking about during work suddenly starts showing up at night.

The weird part is I’m physically tired, but mentally it feels like something is still running in the background.

Almost like I ended my shift but forgot to close a bunch of tabs in my head.

Anyone else get this?

And if yes… what actually helps you switch out of "developer mode"?

Been noticing something after my last post:

A lot of people said some version of:

“I physically leave work... but mentally I’m still there.”

Replaying conversations.
Thinking about stuff you missed.
Random work thoughts showing up at night.

Now I’m curious:

For the people who deal with this...

What’s the hardest part?

The overthinking?

Sleep?

Never feeling fully “off”?

Or something else?

Does anyone else feel like they never actually leave work anymore?

Been noticing something recently and wondering if this is common in safety roles.

I leave work physically… but mentally I still feel there.

Driving home and replaying conversations. Thinking about things I missed. Going over small details in my head. Random “what if” scenarios popping up hours later.

And the weird part is I’m not even thinking about major incidents.

Just constant low-level pressure.

Like my brain never fully clocks out.

I know people joke about “taking work home,” but I’m starting to wonder if after doing this long enough your mind just stays switched on by default.

Some days I’m physically exhausted but mentally still running in the background.

Anyone else deal with this?

And if you did… what actually helped?

I miss when finishing work actually felt like being done

Lately I’ve noticed that even after work ends, my brain still feels like it’s “on”.

I’ll answer emails all day, deal with tasks, conversations, pressure… then finally sit down at night and somehow still feel mentally busy.

Like work follows me home even when nobody is contacting me anymore.

Honestly starting to wonder if this is just normal adult life now or if people actually know how to mentally switch off after work.

STUCK?

I’ve noticed that lately I can sit down, stop working, even try to relax… and somehow still feel mentally exhausted.

Like my body stopped but my brain didn’t.

The weird part is I’m not even actively thinking about one thing. It’s more like constant background noise in my head all the time.

I don’t know if this is stress, burnout, anxiety or just adulthood at this point lol.

Anyone else deal with this?

I’ve been thinking about this a bit.

What if burnout isn’t just too much work, but more like your brain never really shuts off?

Even after you’re done for the day, it’s still running in the background.

Feels like that might explain why rest doesn’t always help.

Not sure though. Curious what other people think.

I’ve been noticing something lately and I’m not sure if it’s just me.

Even when I finish work for the day, my brain doesn’t really stop. Like I can close everything, sit down, try to relax… but my mind is still going.

It just keeps jumping between random stuff. Things I didn’t finish, conversations from earlier, small details I probably shouldn’t even care about.

What’s weird is I can feel physically tired, but mentally it’s like I’m still “working” in the background.

I tried some of the usual advice like limiting screen time or trying to relax before bed, but it doesn’t really fix this part.

Feels more like my brain just never fully switches off.

Anyone else deal with this?

If yes, what actually helped you calm your mind down after work?
