(Spoilers) HL:A final twist is much bigger that I thought before.
First of all, why would G-Man hire Alyx? What is the logic behind that move?
We know that G-Man is in fact a very wise and precise guy, who can see (?) the future.
I found a reason behind this move and!!! a bonus theory.
At the end of HL2:ep2 Eli is getting mind-read and killed by an Advisor, so the Combine is now have information about every further rebellion move (also, most important, information about Borealis). So, Combine would probably win in this situation, and this is a BAD ending for G-Man and his employers (I’ll explain why later)
To “nudge” things in a different direction, G-Man let the Combine capture him 5 years before the events of HL2. In this timeline Gordon is still in stasis, so the only one who can set G-Man free is Alyx. And Alyx is going to be the only reason for Gordon, who’s not willing to perform G-Man’s tasks, to follow the G-Man’s orders.
So, what is the main goal of G-Man in this story? - Borealis. This Ship is probably much more powerful than we thought before, and it could be capable of doing more things than just teleportation in time and space in one World, but also to a different Worlds, which is why G-Man’s employers are scared. If the Combine get hands on this type of weapon it would be a disaster, so G-Man’s employers authorise him to prevent this at any cost. That’s why G-Man hires Alyx, the only woman in this world who Gordon truly loves, and that’s why Story is being retconned.
BONUS THEORY: G-Man is Valve himself. They’re apologising for the long absence, and give us the option to “take matters into our own hands”, pushing story further, completely changing it, and opening up new ways for future Game.
HL2 development takes about $40 million (1999-2004, with marketing etc.) not including episodes.
HL:A, on the other hand, is really debatable. Some internet sources says that $30-45 million took place, some $200-300 million (including the hardware development).
How much would HLX development cost? Is there any new patents in this game, or maybe technology with NPC’s AI behaviour?
In the last 5 years we’ve seen that they’re upgrading Source 2 engine for this game, but they’re UPGRADING, not rebuilding it from scratch.
So, my estimation is around $50-80 million only for development, excluding marketing campaign and hardware.
At least we know that this game is gonna be super polished in aspects like story (and graphics ofc)
Let’s just PRAY it wouldn’t get cancelled…
