Tail lifting

My boy is 1 week post-op Stage 5, Neg DPS. His tail has started to lift when we express his bladder, and has wagged it twice when we’ve greeted him (very slightly). His legs are still very much dragging but I know it’s early days.

Is this a sign of some recovery? I’m really trying to not get any hopes up and take things as they come, but it’s so hard not to. This feels small but positive.

Bladder expressing

Hi all

I’m on day one of crate rest and have been advised to express his bladder. I’m finding it quite difficult but some pee has come out. Feeling a bit out of my depth atm.

3 questions for you lovely people:

1- any tips on bladder expressing? any helpful videos?
2- any good tips on how to keep him clean? he’s not relaxing very easily and is licking himself when he leaks
3- Ive gone through a million blankets already, any tips on pen setup? This might just be something I need to suck up and change them super regularly. He has bed>puppy pad>blanket at the moment.

Thank you in advance x

Nerves about Dog coming home post surgery

Hi all

Our beautiful dog Jasper is home tomorrow after a traumatic few days. He jumped off our bed and herniated a disc, had emergency surgery over the weekend and is now static. Negative DPS currently in back legs.

It’s been one of the most heartbreaking and frankly traumatic things I’ve experienced, but I’m trying to remain positive and practical at this point.

We’re getting ready to care for him and rehab him at home - we’ve set up a pen downstairs for him and I’m hoping and praying he’ll settle in there. He’s a Doxie so knows his own mind, and I’m anticipating some resistance 🥴 We have foam pads, a waterproof base, tons of blankets to interchange over his bed, a kong and reindeer antler for amusement and puppy pads.

Does anyone have any really invaluable tips for those first nights back home after surgery, or if you could change anything what would it be?

My partner is on night shifts this week too so it will be just me with Jasper overnight - I’m feeling extremely nervous about how it will go.

Thanks in advance 💙
