Retinol vs Retinal

I saw someone compare retinol and retinal to chicken breast and protein 😄

Basically, “retinoid” is the broader category, kind of like “protein.”
Retinol and retinal are both types of retinoids, just like chicken breast is one source of protein.

The key difference is how many steps they need to convert into retinoic acid, which is the active form your skin actually uses.

Retinol has to go through two conversion steps:

Retinol → Retinal → Retinoic Acid

Retinal only needs one:

Retinal → Retinoic Acid

So in simple terms, retinal is closer to the active form, which is why it’s often considered stronger or faster-acting than retinol. But that can also mean it may be more irritating, depending on your skin.

Retinol is usually seen as the gentler, more beginner-friendly option. Retinal may be a better choice if your skin already tolerates retinoids well and you want something a bit more potent without jumping straight to prescription tretinoin.
