Hi everyone! I've been quietly lurking on this subreddit since that dreadful day in March 2025.

Being from South America, I fulfilled the challenging task of saving €7,000 over the years, each penny with the dream of going to Italy in sight. Before 2025, I did try to get an appointment through Prenotami, but I gave up fairly quickly. All my friends were trying as well with no success, and that discouraged me from continuing down that path. Unfortunately, I don't have any proof of such attempt.

With money in hand, I hired a researcher to gather all the certificates for my family tree, starting from my Italian great-great-grandfather, who never naturalized and remained Italian until his death. I also found a lawyer who worked alongside the researcher, and he was going to initiate a case against the queue for me and my sister. My reasoning for not insisting on the administrative route was that I wanted to move to Italy as soon as possible, and my lawyer assured me that, through a trial, I could travel to Italy and obtain a permesso di soggiorno per attesa cittadinanza while waiting for the process to conclude. Excited, I started studying Italian (and English) while all the paperwork was slowly being gathered by the researcher I had hired.

With only a few certificates left to obtain, March 2025 hit and left us dead in the water.
After that, my lawyer and his team recalibrated. A few months later, he offered all his clients (and potential clients) the possibility of filing a case challenging the constitutionality of the decree. The cost would be roughly the same as the original trial, and he assured me I could still obtain a permesso di soggiorno.

That was last year, and I’ve taken several months to reconsider everything, while also dealing with a severe episode of major depression triggered by everything that happened in March, which shattered a life plan I had been building for years.

With today’s news, I find myself in despair again. I was just starting to get back on my feet and consider going through with this new trial, rebuilding my plans for a life in Italy with the permesso, which felt like better than nothing.

What would you do in my position? I’ve already invested a lot of money in obtaining the certificates, so I’d like to avoid letting that go to waste. But at the same time, I don’t want to spend what I have left on something that may not be viable, leaving me stuck in my country and thousands of euros poorer.

I honestly don’t have any other use for that money besides going to Italy. I’ve also considered a student visa, but that feels like a temporary solution rather than a long-term path toward citizenship.

If you’ve read this far, thank you. I really hope that one day we can all move past this and that it becomes nothing more than a bitter memory.
