The Guardian takes delightfully snarky aim at the anniversary candle

Mods: I searched for this link and didn't find it, but if it's a duplicate, please delete.

The Guardian has a delightfully snarky, tongue-in-cheek article about TW's ridiculous eighth anniversary candle. I love the snark, but I also really love some of the really specific call-outs:

Price: Yours for just $64, which is roughly £48.

Sorry, that is objectively too much for a candle. Oh come on, it’s for an anniversary. What better way to mark a special occasion than with a beautiful scented candle?

I suppose when you put it like that. What’s the big occasion? The eighth wedding anniversary of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

(NB: Interesting here that only Hazbeen has a hyperlink to his name. It goes to a page that houses a bunch of articles about him, which is common for the BRF and celebrities. when I edit the back half of that link to read 'Meghan-Markle,' I get a 404 error.)

That’s it? Come on, where’s your sense of romance? Isn’t there a tiny part of you that wants to drop half the cost of a weekly shop (emphasis here mine and added) on a candle that says “I recognise that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have now been married for eight years”?

Without going into politics, because that's not what this page is for, the world writ large is feeling economic pressures. Costs of everything have gone up astronomically, and inflation is absolutely outstripping income increases through COLAs, promotions, etc. People are tightening their belts across all areas of discretionary spending, and very few people are going to drop $64/£48 on a candle that they can't smell and that has a 50-50 chance of turning up without a wick.

Also--it's not new. It's the same old tired candle she's been shilling since the get-go. It's not even like she updated it for the anniversary.

Further on in the article:

Glad we’re agreed. I mean, who is this for? Markle’s jams I understand, (N.B.: This link goes to a two-year-old article with a critical headline and content, so the language used for the link is deceiving) because everyone likes jams. I can even understand her other candles, because who doesn’t like a candle?

Sure. But a candle you have made on the assumption that people will want to celebrate an arbitrary wedding anniversary? Come on, Markle, you’re not exactly making it easy to root for you. (Emphasis here mine and added.)

I can't archive because I'm at work, so article slides are in the post.

Spoiler alert: The profound, ground-breaking, earth-shattering nickname she has for one of the Invisikids is....'sweetheart.'

According to the article, in the video she says, ""When the chocolate man comes to see the chickens," Meghan, 44, said with a laugh at the beginning of the first video as she showed the two of them in the coop. She then flipped the camera around to show two of the family's chickens."

'The chocolate man' is Jonathan Grahm, the founder of the Los Angeles-based artisan chocolate brand Compartés. So she has once again reduced someone to the lowest common denominator in an attempt to make herself feel better and more important.

Also, the article says that in the video, one child is heard to say, "I got another grey one," possibly referring to an egg, and TW responds 'Thanks, sweetheart,' which is how we learn what her 'adorable' nickname for the child(ren) is.

But also--tell me without telling me that you're not a mother or around small children, because my default response would have been 'Good job!' or 'Oh, wow!' or 'Well done!' or some other type of congratulations to the child, since it's their accomplishment. To say 'thank you' makes it sound like she thinks the child is doing the action for her, which, to be fair, she probably does.

I didn't screen-grab the rest of the article because it just blathers on about her candles and her chocolates and their recent 'jam-packed' (I wonder if the pun was intended?) trip to Australia and blah, blah, bullshit.

ETF: Slides in comments because they didn't carry over from when I started on mobile and finished on desktop.
