I'm trying to remember who this character is. It's a female character who is obsessed with being useful and not being a burden. As a child she was abandoned in a forest by her mother to die because the village they were from was super poor and had little to no food. The mother was chastised by the villagers for having a child when the village could barely survive. The mother then takes the daughter to the middle of a forest to to abandon her to die so the mother and the village wouldn't have to give the daughter food. The daughter becomes obsessed with always being helpful and never a burden. I think she also had a tendency to always smile as to not be considered a burden. She runs after her mom but the mom basically hits her and yells at her for being a burden then leaves. Then there's a seen where she's told that they won't abandon her and it's ok to cry etc etc. The mom and the character were wearing rags in the flashback. That's all I can remember. I think this was from a fantasy and a relatively recent series maybe last 5-10 years?
