I recently went to MEPS and my recruiter submitted my mental health waiver, so I am currently waiting on a decision.
When I was 13, I went through a really difficult time in my life. My mom passed away from cancer in our home, and after that my siblings and I were separated. They went to live with their dad, and I entered foster care because I have a different father. During that time, I struggled a lot emotionally and made a one time suicide attempt by overdosing on amphetamines.
After that incident, I was admitted to a psychiatric hospital for about two weeks. While I was there, I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety, and amphetamine abuse was listed in my record because it was related to that situation.
Since then, I have worked hard to move forward and stay on the right path. I stopped taking any mental health medication in January 2019 and have been stable without treatment since. I have not had any further mental health issues, suicidal thoughts, or substance use.
I understand how serious my past actions were and I take full responsibility for them. At the same time, that period of my life was tied to what I was going through as a kid and does not reflect who I am today. I am focused on my future and committed to meeting the standards required to serve in the Navy.
