Is there a logic to Revachol's accents?
Most characters from other countries have their own distinct and consistent accents, but Revacholians are quite diverse. Many of the characters' accents- along with the naming conventions and certain words and places- are decidedly French, and the accent occurs at all class strata, but Revacholians also have a range of British and American accents. There are just enough patterns to develop theories, yet just enough exceptions to make them fall flat. Joyce and Dora, for instance, speak in prim, crisp, RP accents, and are educated women from moneyed backgrounds, yet Evrart Clair and Plaisance also have (less posh) English accents and grew up poor and middle class, respectively. Many of the working class types, like the Hardy Boys, have a common US accent, but so do the all Oranjese you meet. The Detective himself is never explicitly given a canonical voice, and his surname is seemingly French, but his inner voices are all British- though skills are smooth and eloquent, while his subconscious and "karaoke voice" are course and informal. Accents are inconsistent across all levels of society, and even two people born and raised together in as small an area as Martinaise sound completely different.
