Our facility (a 3PL) has been suffering from a growing backlog of putaway and we were failing to meet putaway SLA, so management decided to create a team to deal with it. I was promoted to "receiving lead" and given a small team of direct reports. Our goal is basically to fix the situation.
The problem is that our facility is near capacity. It can take hours to get any putaway tasks done because we have to constantly move/rearrange other palletized product to make room for new inbound pallets, and multiple trailers arrive per day. (Yesterday, for example, we unloaded around 120 pallets.) Worse, my team is constantly being pulled away to help other departments when those departments are short-staffed. It's a one step forward/two steps back kind of situation and I'm tired.
Is this normal? I'm only an hourly worker but I often skip my breaks just to keep working. I also do off-the-clock planning just to keep my head above water. I want to bail, but I also know that this is a stepping stone to a better future and I don't want to be a quitter.
