Widen a Solid Wood Door
I've got a solid wood door -- 76 x 35 x 1 3/4 (it actually tapers from 35 3/4 at the top to 34 3/4 at the bottom!) and about 90 pounds -- (insane, I know, but I am doing a favor for a friend) that I need to widen (to 35 3/4) by about an inch. How stable would it be to glue a strip (probably white oak) to the hinge side, given the heavy weight?
It was already a door, so holes for knobs and such have already been cut which I'd like to reuse -- I'd rather not add to that side, fill holes, and cut new ones, and I would like to have a clean surface for the new hinges. I could definitely add some joinery (and/or screw/hardware) like floating tenons or tongue and groove, but gluing long grain to long grain is so strong in my mind that I'm wondering if I even need it.
Any thoughts? I have never built or hung a door, just done furniture/small craft, and I know you all are a helpful bunch!
