Internship under Prof. Gaurav Kumar Nayak confirmed in January, rejected right before summer starts

I’m honestly very frustrated right now and wanted to know if others have faced similar situations.

Back in January, I received confirmation for a summer internship under Prof. Gaurav Kumar Nayak’s lab. Because of that confirmation, I stopped pursuing and even cancelled other internship opportunities and planned my summer around this.

Now, right before the internship period starts, I was suddenly informed that there are “no vacancies/projects available” and was asked to look elsewhere.

I completely understand that project availability can change, but informing a student this late feels extremely unprofessional. Internship season is almost over, and now I’m left without any internship options despite having received prior confirmation months ago.

What makes it worse is that students make decisions based on these confirmations — applications, travel plans, other offers, etc.

Has anyone else dealt with labs/professors backing out this late? Is this common in research internships?

I am now left with no internship. Summer ruined all because of unprofessionalism.🙏
