Getting my 8 year old to settle at bedtime is a full time job

Our 8 year old's brain seems to go into overdrive right when it's time for bed. He'll call me back in to read another book, which sometimes helps for a minute but then he's just tossing and turning again. We've tried the calm music and dimmed lights routine but he's still wide awake an hour later, just staring at the ceiling. I'm heading to work completely exhausted and it's starting to affect his mood the next day too. I just want to ask parents who have been going through this, what ended up helping?
