This school year I have a number of autistic students. I teach gen ed math. Teachers have gone up in arms about one child who doesn’t get work done, complaining t he e child zones out a lot. Today was the day the intervention team would decide if a more restrictive setting was more appropriate. I could not sleep last night worrying I would not get a chance to chime in. I had already sent an email summarizing my thoughts, but I still worried I would be looked over in the meeting. By a sheer stroke of luck, I was able to jump right into the convo and set the tone for how capable this student is and that, due to sensory and executive function differences, the child may appear spacey. Also, that it is irresponsible to expect the student to behave like an NT student. What a relief to know that the child will remain in gen ed!
