Finishing PhD with a full-time job?
Hi, all! Would love to hear people's thoughts/advice.
I'm an advanced doctoral candidate in Humanities with an anticipated completion time by September/early fall. Since my funding is running out within a couple of months and my health insurance isn't guaranteed, I realized I need to take a well-paying full or part-time job to supplement my income. I was offered a full-time teaching position at a top private college-prep school in my field of study. I won't have residential duties, but I would teach 4 sections of 2 different courses, advise students, and supervise a club. However, after thinking through the role more, I'm worried that taking this position might impede my ability to finish on time, and I already feel pressed for time to get my mediocre dissertation into shape within my funding window. Unfortunately, the timeframe for responding to the position is equally truncated, so I don't have time to meet with my advisors for their insights ahead of time.
I'm wondering: has anyone taken a full-time position while trying to complete a PhD, and how did that work for you? Or has anyone taken a position in a boarding/college prep school space while finishing a PhD, and how did you manage? Or just any advice in general? Thank you!!
