Accommodation Struggles As Usual

My name is Ace (23F) and I'll be joining Institut Pasteur de Lille as a doctoral student starting September 2026, for 3 years. Housing is getting a little urgent now, so I thought I'd ask the people who actually know Lille best!

What I'm looking for:

  • Furnished room, max €700/month (all-in ideally)
  • Within ~10 min walk of Institut Pasteur de Lille, Rue du Professeur Calmette- so roughly the Grand Palais area, Rue d'Arras corridor, or the southern end of Wazemmes
  • Flatsharing is totally fine- but max 4 people please
  • Available from September 2026 (earlier is fine too!)

A bit about me: I'm quiet during the week (long lab days!) and more of a homebody on weekends. I don't smoke or drink, I'm respectful of everyone's space and I genuinely enjoy living with people- past housemates in the US and Austria have become good friends 😊 I speak English, German, Hindi and Bengali, and I'm actively learning French (definitely a struggle!)

Why I'm asking here: I've been browsing La Carte des Colocs, PAP, etc., but most listings that look geographically close turn out to be further than expected once you check walking distance to the lab. CROUS is also on my radar but I'd love to hear about private rentals, direct landlords, or colocs that aren't widely listed- the kind of thing only locals would know about! I heard its too late for CROUS already, so whelps- that ship has sailed.

Any leads, tips, or advice on the area are hugely welcome. Thanks so much!

Looking for accommodation and struggling

Bonjour!

*Please excuse me if I make any mistakes- I am using a translator*

Merci beaucoup!

▲ 1 r/French

I speak B2 German as one of my third languages. Recently, I have started to learn French (literally only Bonjour and sil vous plait!), because I'm going for a PhD there (in 5 months)- and I know how important it is to be fluent. But when I tried to self-study, its so damn hard! The pronunciation really makes my face and brain hurt- its also because I have a big bias, coming from German where you speak what your write.

I also feel as if I'll confuse German- and loose my fluency level! Maybe even forget it, because again- its not my primary language!

How do you differentiate/compartmentalise languages? People who are trilingual or more- have you faced any problems like these? Honestly, how different is French compared to German- and do you think I'm approaching French in the wrong manner?

P.S. I now understand why people say French is a romantic language- it feels musical- and I'd probably fall asleep if I wasn't trying to desperately learn the vocabulaire...

I had been going through an extremely difficult time in my life- I just graduated and was desperately looking for PhD opportunities. Every time I got close, it kept slipping through my fingers.

Overall, I was mentally exhausted and just very negative. The one thing I did- I kept faith. When things didn't work for me, I decided to let it go. I decided to focus on myself- and do my own work. I decided to have faith in Bhagwan Shiva and hope he'd let the world come to me.

I kept true to myself- and in hindsight, these words/feelings might be difficult to put into words. But Bhagwan Shiva gave me immense strength- I was also able to participate in a full night of Mahashivratri festivities this year (from my home, at night, afraid someone might hear). I'm very private, and I don't like to advertise my relation to Him.

Anyways, this post is just an ode to Him. No matter what His form, no matter what His incantations, trust and faith in Him made me excel. I got a position in France- and I'm ever grateful!

I had read how 'when we want something we desperately pray to Him. But the moment we get it, we forget Him'- or even that story of how Lord Vishnu humbled Narayan Muni even though he said his name every time but a poor farmer recited his name even during tough times (a bad gist of the story!). So, I want to be humble, and hope Bhagwan Shiva keeps me grounded.

To everyone struggling, everyone crying in desperation, I hope you stay strong mentally. I hope Bhagwan Shiva gives you all the strength and hope He stands tall in our minds. My only request- be kind, be humble.

---From a devotee who's still learning and afraid, but is immersed in Lord Shiva's whims and wishes---
