What’s Your Major & Would You Change it?

What did you major in and if you had the opportunity to change it, would you?

I’m going to pick my major soon and I’d love to see what others did!

Chemistry vs Biochem Major?

I haven't committed to a major yet and I'm looking for something that will look nice on a med school application, but mainly something that's somewhat enjoyable and include a decent amount of the prerequisites already needed for medical school.

Harvard Prerequisites

I'm about to begin my first year of college (dual enrollment through my school as a junior in high school) and I thought it would be best to use the Harvard prerequisite list as a guide for the prerequisite classes I choose to take in order to hopefully qualify for majority of medical schools following the MCAT.

It states under the chemistry requirements that "two years of chemistry (four courses) including inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry are required."

I've already signed up for my fall classes and had planned on taking introductory chemistry + lab during my Spring semester, followed by Gen Chem 1 and Gen Chem 2 (both with lab) for my Sophomore year. Following that I'd be transferring into a different, non-community college after graduating from high school.

I'm confused about what exactly is being asked as it says "two years of chemistry." I need to take Intro Chem in order to take Gen Chem 1, so it would technically be more than two years. I'm basically wonder what the exact course path would look like in order to satisfy the chemistry prerequisites as I'm worried about overloading myself and hurting my GPA.

I've also taken Biology 1 + Lab online through Arizona State University, but I didn't feel like like it was very comprehensive so I'm thinking of retaking it in order to feel confident.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

EDIT: replaced classes I'm taking from orgo chem 1 to gen chem 2.

Confused About Research and Clinical Prerequisites

For context I'm entering Junior year in highschool, but I'm doing a college dual enrollment program that will allow me to graduate with my AA.

I've been trying to formulate a plan in order to prepare myself to take the MCAT and apply for medical school when I finish my bachelors (which is another difficulty as I can't decide what to major in).

I sort of understand some of the prerequisites for most baseline medical schools, but I'd love to keep my options open when applying. I'm about to start volunteering at my local library and I'm attempting to get a volunteering position at a local hospital.

I noticed that others mentioned research and clinical hours as a part of their pre-med pathways and was wondering what exactly that entails? I'd love to have an application that looks appealing to medical schools and the councillors at the community college I'm dual enrolled in aren't well versed in the subject.

What would be an ideal plan to make my application appealing while also getting some really good experience in? I'm still struggling to find the perfect major that would somewhat overlap with medical school prerequisites, so any suggestions would be extremely welcomed.

Also if there's some kind of compilation of prerequisites for the middle to higher end medical schools I would really appreciate that as I'd love to start building out a schedule for spring semester (I'm already registered for summer and fall). I'd rather have prerequisites that satisfy the majority of medical schools than exclusively those that would be applicable to some of the baseline schools.

Thank you so much, I know half of this is rambling and probably sounds ignorant but I've tried to research this heavily for far too many days and I'm confusing myself.

Best Jobs and Certifications for High School

I'm currently entering Junior year of high school where I'll be doing college dual enrollment (exclusively college courses) and I'm planning on pursuing a career in medicine. I engage in sports as extracurriculars, but I'm downsizing my previous three teams to just one team in order to give myself extra time to study so I can maintain a high GPA.

I've been struggling to find a job that would be fulfilling and also look good on a medical school application for the future. Obviously I don't expect medical schools to care that much about a high school Junior's job, but I like to get some experience on the board.

I'm happy to have a 'regular' teenage job, but I'd also like to start engaging in the medical field in some way. What certifications are worth my time and would be the most beneficial for teen jobs in order to get some experience and make my application look good?

P.S. I'm attempting to get a volunteering position and have networked my way into hopefully securing a few shadowing opportunities for nurses and physicians in order to observe a bit. Volunteering is difficult due to the limited number of hospitals near me which allow students my age therefore I'd prefer to acquire a job + I'd love/need to make some money.

Thank you!

Best Bachelor's Degree for Premed

I'm currently a dual enrollment student in high school who's getting pretty close to being dead set on pursuing medical school over an alternative medical field. I'd love to finish as many classes within a bachelor's degree as I can while still in high school—especially since it will all be free—but I'd need to commit to a major.

What do med schools look for most as far as majors go? I'm happy to learn basically anything and I'm confident I could maintain a high GPA.

Also, during a brief conversation with a counselor at the college I'm current dual enrolled at there was a brief mention of the order in which classes are taken. Does the order of the medical school prerequisite classes matter at all, or can I take them in whichever order I see fit?

Thank you!
