Windows handheld users: what’s the most annoying part of using Windows with a controller?
I’ve always been more of a console player.
I use Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch a lot, and what I really like about consoles is how simple the experience feels: turn it on, grab a controller, pick a game, and play.
When I started gaming more on Windows, I wanted that same kind of experience on PC. I tried a few existing launchers, including Playnite, but they felt a bit too complex for what I personally wanted. They are powerful, but I was looking for something lighter, simpler, and more focused on using a controller from the couch.
So I started building my own launcher.
I ended up calling it Ammonis, and I’ve put it on the Microsoft Store (Ammonis - Game Launcher) for free in case anyone wants to try it.
The goal is not to replace Steam, Playnite, or anything like that. I just wanted a clean console-style interface for Windows that feels easy to use with a gamepad.
Also, for anyone curious about the tech side: it’s built with Rust and egui. The whole install is just over 10 MB, and memory usage sits around 70 MB on my machine.
I’m still improving it, but I’d love to hear what other console / handheld / couch PC players think.
