Stone Mountain Fireworks

I’ll be staying at a lake house outside Gainesville the week before Independence Day. My family lived in the Atlanta area for a couple of years when I was young, and for nostalgia we were hoping to see fireworks at Stone Mountain on a weekday before the holiday (we know the light show is different and the park has changed). We are not particularly interested in spending a whole day outside in the heat, paying for the rather pricey ticket to enjoy the current attractions at Stone Mountain (and the problematic history doesn’t help add to my excitement to spend extensive time there). We are truthfully only interested in getting on the lawn and watching the show that night.

Now I know that you can purchase tickets just for the light and fireworks show, but that purchasing them in advance does not reserve a space in the park if the park becomes full. We are a little bit torn on what to do - we would ideally spend the day in Atlanta and then drive over to the park and sit on the lawn for a couple hours before the show starts, but dont know what crowds to expect on a random weekday before the holiday. Any advice or recent personal experience getting into Stone Mountain for the fireworks in the days prior to the 4th?
