Old cat with FARS triggered by typing.
I have an old cat with Feline Audiogenic Reflex Seizures (FARS) he developed it about a year ago. He was a feral and he’s probably somewhere between 18-20. Ive had him for like 16 years. He likes to sit on my lap when I use the computer and if I type at the right frequency (which is hard to control sometimes) I can feel him in my lap start to have myoclonic jerks. If the sound continues he will go into a grand mal seizure that lasts about 30 seconds with a recovery time of about 2 minutes. He will do this with pretty much any keyboard I have even quiet ones its not the noise per se but the frequency is seems. Ive seen someone using a cutting board and stuff on TV trigger one as well. If I put him outside the room to keep from triggering him he howls and scratches the door. This cat will beat on the door endlessly if he wants in. Medications from the vet don’t seem to be helping. Are there like ear muffs for cats or something or some other way I can isolate him from the sound and still have him on my lap? Hes almost deaf now anyway, but he can’t hear me shaking a treats box, but he still hears enough to be able to have seizures.
