DPsych Counselling Psychology GCU

Current trainees and those who secured interviews for this academic year: what experience and qualifications did you have prior to applying? I’m preparing to apply in 2027 and trying to figure out what I can do over the next year to enhance my application.

I’m currently doing pre-reg MSc Mental Health Nursing (due to circumstances there is a real possibility that my bursary won’t be extended after an interruption and I won’t be able to complete this 😢) I have hundreds of hours of placement in substance use, community mental health, emergency department and a few other shorter placements. I’m also a respite foster carer for my local authority. So I have much to reflect on if I can’t complete. This MSc was a route to getting onto the DPsych, I have no desire to be a nurse.

I have BSc (Hons) Psychology 2.1, COSCA Certificate in Counselling Skills and my work experience is limited due to previously caring for a family member where I couldn’t work. I have mostly nanny experience, minimal support worker/personal assistant experience and placements.

I guess what I’m asking is if I can’t complete the nursing MSc what can I do in the next year to improve my chances of interview next year? I don’t know if my focus should be on a psychology masters (totally out of the loop with research, it’s been a while since my undergrad) or a mental health/helping role. Maybe something else?
