New video editor with a limited setup looking for advice

Hi everyone,

I've been editing videos as a hobby for years. Mostly just fun projects with friends and the occasional anime edit that you see all over the internet. Now I'd like to start doing it professionally, and I'd really appreciate some advice from people with more experience.

I've never worked with clients before, so my biggest questions are:

- How do you find your first clients?

- What skills should I focus on learning before I start taking paid work?

- What mistakes should beginners avoid?

My current setup is pretty limited. I only have a laptop with 8GB of RAM, so I've been using Shotcut for editing. Because of some personal circumstances, I lost the setup I used to have, so right now I'm working with what I can afford.

My idea is to start with short-form content like YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, and TikToks. Since I'm just starting out, I would charge very little at first because my main goal is to gain experience and build a portfolio.

Video editing is something I genuinely want to pursue as a career, and over time I'd like to improve my skills and upgrade my setup as much as possible.

Thanks for reading, and I'd appreciate any advice you can share!
