Question: How Do You Actually Hire A Video Editor?

Do Not Message Me. I don't know much about video editing. But know a lot about scammers and how they scam on here. Thanks

Any Advice, Thanks

So say that I have some videos that I need to have edited. (Not asking here.. asking how to ask)

Looking through the hire reddit, I see a lot of flash cuts, lot of people offering free or 5 bucks, 15 an hour, people saying they should charge 1000's, people offering $10 bucks per video. but most of the videos: words quickly splash across the screen, fast jump cuts, etc., not what I'm looking for.

I want something like the video posted below , I really like how the graphics and color told the story as much as the guy talking.

  1. What video editing style is that?
  2. How do you storyboard that for an editor, as I think I am a creative guy, but I don't know what's possible or how to even how to ask really.
  3. What is a reasonable and fair charge, for roughly a 4 minute video? I see the OP said, $35, then said $35 per minute, but he never actually said he created the video. Alluded to it, I assume he did.
  4. How do you not hire a scammer that shows someone else's portfolio, I hired someone last year, that had a great portfolio, Send him some stuff and what he sent back was something well his edits were worse than my edits and I'm not a video editor and I don't think he actually read what I was asking for.. (Also 2 to 3 weeks of I'm getting to it, after saying he would work on and have it completed in 48 hours,

Any thoughts greatly apricated.

What's one thing you wish you knew earlier that would've saved you years in motion design?

Hey motion designers,

I've been thinking about something lately.

People often say that if you want to build a business, one of the fastest ways is to work under someone who's already building one. You learn from their experience, avoid many of their mistakes, and grow much faster.

It's similar to how a parent spends years learning hard lessons, but their child can learn many of those same lessons in a much shorter time because someone has already been through the journey.

That's the idea behind my question.

I'm currently learning motion design and Premiere Pro, but I don't want to spend years making the same avoidable mistakes that others have already made.

I know that if I put in enough hours, I'll eventually become good at the software. That's just a matter of time and practice.

What I really want to learn is everything beyond the software—the things that only come from real experience.

Time is becoming more valuable every day, and the competition is growing rapidly. I'm trying to learn smarter, not just harder.

So I wanted to ask those of you who've been in the industry for a while.

What is one mistake that cost you months or even years?

What is something you wish someone had told you when you were just starting?

What skill, mindset, habit, or approach accelerated your growth the most?

If you could mentor your younger self for one day, what advice would you give that would've saved the most time?

I'm not looking for shortcuts because I know mastery takes time.

I'm looking for the lessons that don't come from tutorials. The lessons you only learn through real-world experience.

I'd rather learn from people who've already walked this path than spend years repeating the same mistakes.

I'd genuinely appreciate any advice or stories you can share.

Took me nearly an entire day to edit this...

Any Feedback is much appreciated.

Note: I know sound design is missing, but I was super frustrated about how long it took. and I kinda left it at that.

Need honest feedback on an edit that got rejected

Hey everyone,

I recently made a sample edit for a potential client, but they rejected it, saying it wasn't up to their expectations.

I'd really appreciate some honest criticism from experienced editors here. Was the pacing off? Did the storytelling not work? Were the transitions, sound design, motion graphics, or overall feel lacking? Or is there something else that immediately stands out?

I'm not looking for people to sugarcoat it. If you can point out both the strengths and weaknesses, that would help me a lot.

I've attached the edit below. Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to watch it and share their thoughts.

Need Help: Opening a Premiere Pro 2026 Project in Premiere Pro 2023 – Downgrade Doesn't Work

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to open a Premiere Pro 2026 project in Premiere Pro 2023, but I'm completely stuck.

The thing is, this project is extremely simple. It only contains:

  • A few video clips
  • Some basic cuts
  • One audio track

There are no advanced Premiere Pro 2026 features being used—no AI tools, no Generative Extend, no Auto Translate, no new effects, no Motion Graphics, no third-party plugins, nothing. It's literally just a basic edit.

Here's what I've tried:

  • ✅ Used the Premiere Pro Downgrader website.
  • ✅ It successfully created a downgraded .prproj file.
  • ❌ But when I open that file in Premiere Pro 2023, I get this error:

>

  • Is the project actually damaged?
  • Is the downgrader not converting something correctly?
  • Has anyone else had this issue even with a very simple project?

I don't understand why it won't open because there aren't any features that Premiere Pro 2023 shouldn't be able to handle.

Has anyone successfully downgraded a 2026 project to 2023?

If you've found a solution, please let me know. I'm really hoping I don't have to recreate the entire edit from scratch.

Thanks in advance, guys! 🙏

What are realistic editing rates?

Ok for context, I am not a professional editor. I'm a smallish Youtuber and completely self taught when it comes to everything post production

Ever since I made my channel, there is this *huge* Youtuber who has reacted to over half my videos (his reactions also ratio'd the heck out of me, nearly 20x-30x the views of my own videos) and yesterday I found an email from him reaching out to me to see if I would be interested in editing a video for him and he asked for my rates.

and I have *no idea* what proper editing rates even look like. if it's anything like my own videos, i'd assume this would include cuts, audio and color balancing, very simple VFX, etc. Nothing technically impressive but I feel like my strength is my ability to use simple editing techniques in creative ways. maybe about 20 hours of work for every 15 minutes of footage.

What are *real* editing rates to ask for? Not free. Not to build a portfolio. I want to hear from the people who have made a career out of this, what do you think is a fair value for this skill level / time spent?

Career in Editing?

Was looking for advice on a career in editing, specifically narrative. Is it a location dependent job? Is learning AVID crucial? How much income should you be expecting? Is doing a master program beneficial? What are the best "steps" in order to be a good editor? What should I do now to become a good editor?
