It's a Chunky!

AIO for using a new bag of shredded cheese after my girlfriend’s son put his bare hands in the open bag?

This is probably stupid to post here but this happened Saturday, and my girlfriend is still bringing it up, including telling me it's weird again today through text so I'm starting to get some kind of gaslighting vibe or whatever; or at the very least disrespect.

Anyway, we were making our plates and there was an open bag of shredded cheese that I watched her 19 year old son reach into with his bare hands. I didn’t say anything or react in any way. I just quietly got in the fridge, grabbed an unopened bag and used cheese from that instead. My girlfriend noticed and got really mad about it. Cold shoulder, short all day, bringing it up repeatedly, etc.

For added context, he is extremely unhygienic. I can’t remember seeing him wash his hands once in the 4.5 years I’ve known him. I’m constantly wiping greasy or dirty food handprints off the fridge and microwave; like with actual chunks of food even mixed in frequently. I also watched his sister eat directly out of a Nutella jar with a spoon and then put it back in the cabinet, so their family is clearly a lot more relaxed about shared food than I am.

My girlfriend says I’m being weird because this is at home and not a restaurant. I brought up the fact that restaurants and food handlers have hygiene standards for a reason, but she said commercial food is completely different. She told me she even asked coworkers and they think reaching in with their hands is normal - they are nurses.

I wasn’t asking anyone to throw the cheese away or anything, and I didn’t criticize her son or tell anyone else not to eat it. I just personally didn’t want it and simply opened another bag and dumped some on my food. now she keeps bringing it up days later and acting like there’s something wrong with me.

Was I actually overreacting or being unusually germophobic here? Or was this reasonable?

Edit to clarify the Nutella comment, 21 year old daughter was eating out of it like a bowl of ice cream - licking the spoon clean and going back in.
