Please help. I haven’t spoken to my agent in 5 years.
When I was 18-years-old in 2020, I signed a representation agreement with an agent at a very reputable and well known literary agency. There weren’t any publishing houses that wanted my YA book, so nothing came of it. I started working on another project in early 2021 and sent him some pages that he liked and was looking forward to reading more of. However, I was starting college that year and in the midst of life happening, I never returned to working on that book. It has now been over 5 years since I have had any communication with him. I am now working on a new book in a different genre that he doesn’t represent and would like to start querying agents again, but given my unique situation I’m confused on how to go about it. I read the contract I originally signed in 2020 and I don’t see anything about it expiring after a certain time period. As awkward as it may be, should I just email him and ask to break the contract for the sake of formality? It should be clear that there’s no relationship between us given the no contact for 5+ years, right?😬
