becoming a student in thailand

Hi, I am a student from USA and I am planning on doing an exchange program to Mahidol in the spring. I don't speak Thai but I'm trying to learn at least basic phrases before going! I'd be staying in Salaya in an apartment, but is there anything I should know before going? What is the structure for classes? The trimester ends right before Songkran Festival, so should I stay for that experience as well? Also, with the schoolwork, is it possible to explore more of Thailand or would I not have time? I'm curious to know what locals think of Mahidol, Salaya, and foreigners as a whole. I'm also South Asian, so would that play any role in my experience? Thank you!

How much should I be studying abroad??

Hi! I just finished my freshman year of college, and I'm looking to study abroad as much as possible between now and my senior year. My major is international studies, and it's very highly encouraged to experience as much of the world as possible before graduation. I'm planning on studying abroad winter of sophomore year, summer before junior year, and a semester during junior year at least, but I was also thinking of going abroad second semester of sophomore year.

I want to utilize my university resources while I can, especially since my financial aid can cover some of the study abroad programs, but I also don't want to miss the undergraduate experience or time with my friends. Can someone recommend whether or not I should go abroad sophomore year? I would stick to mostly breaks to go travel but those programs are highly selective and I'm unlikely to get all of the ones I want.
