Health Insurance After Job Loss

Hi everyone, I have a question about health imsurance things my boyfriend is dealing with. He has 50/50 legal and physical custody in MN with his child’s mom. His custody order states that he is required to carry his son on his health insurance. This has worked out fine until Monday when he lost his job. Him and his son are now eligible for MinnesotaCare/medicaid (respectively) for the duration of him receiving UI. I know that in Minnesota the state will go after the other parent for compensation if a child is receiving Medicaid. I’m curious if anyone knows how much this would be? I can’t find anything online about that.

At the time of finalizing their court order his son’s mom did not have access to health insurance, but she does now, so theoretically his son could go on her insurance. Their dynamic is fairly HC and I don’t envision it going down well asking her to put their son on her insurance since the court order states he has to provide it. But if he does put his son on Medicaid she’ll be on the hook for paying the state back.

So I guess other than the question about how much she would owe the state, I’m curious about how other would handle this situation. Ask for her to have son on her insurance and feel her wrath? Or follow the court order to a T and have her forced to pay back the state, which would probably incur her wrath anyway?

Their income before his job loss was pretty similar and he only pays about $40 of child support each month so he would prefer not to have to go through the whole process of changing the court order when hopefully this situation won’t last a super long time.
