Is it normal for a psychiatrist clinic to ask for my national ID?

I called a psychiatrist clinic to book my first appointment, and the secretary told me they might ask for my national ID when I come in.

Is this normal for psychiatric clinics or private doctors in general?

I’m paying cash, not using insurance, and it’s my first visit, so I was a bit surprised. I’ve always heard that you shouldn’t give your national ID to anyone unless it’s legally required.

Just wondering if this is standard procedure for medical records/registration or if I should be cautious.
