CMV: The word “controversial” has lost all meaning.
Meriam-Webster defines a controversy as “a discussion marked especially by the expression of opposing views”, ie idea that meaningfully divides informed opinion, often with strong arguments on both sides and no easy consensus.
I can say with confidence that is merely used now as a political ploy to make an issue seem more complex than it really is.
Most of what I read deemed as “controversial” seem like very light pushback on an idea, and it’s often pictured as near equally opposing forces clashing over an extremely complex idea, no matter if it actually matters or not.
It more than not never explains WHY something is controversial, whether it be for legitimate grievances or manipulation to make an issue seem more pressing then it actually. I’ve seen statements made about how universal healthcare, not committing mass genocide, science, and blatant racism are all “controversial”, which portrays both sides as equally misunderstood or equally bad.
It’s also overused to the point where I’m just numb to it, and any genuine fault lines in thought I tend to ignore it as background noise.
Overall, if something is deemed “controversial”, it’s not describing reality, but a nothing burger.
