Were you devastated by Sam Cortland?
WARNING: spoilers ahead for Throne of Glass, Crown of Midnight and Assasin’s Blade!!!
Okay I am on Queen of Shadows so please try not to spoil anything from QOS onward in your responses (I think I should be safe from those considering this post is going to be referencing Assassin’s Blade and Throne of Glass.
So ever since I started reading this series, my social media feed has been full of videos of people grieving Sam’s death and saying that it tore them to shreds and made them sob. These people are making me feel heartless because honestly… I was very unattached to his character. Don’t get me wrong, it was sad and Aelin obviously adored him, but I was more affected by Nehemia’s death. And I am a very emotional person. So when I didn’t have the same reaction as most people, I was surprised.
But I have seen a few people say they felt the same as me and were relatively unattached to his character, and there is a bit of a trend. I think it’s related to the order in which you read the books. So I am curious to you other readers: What order did you read the books in? And how did his death affect you? I am curious if people who read TAB first were more attached to Sam because they didn’t know he was going to die. I read TOG, COM, then TAB. I wasn’t that sad because I knew his fate going into the book and already knew it would be tragic, which maybe desensitized me a bit?
Just curious if reading order has any influence on how you perceived his death. Please don’t hate on me I am not saying I dislike Sam!! I just don’t think his death had the same effect on me as most people.
