Guitar solos from chords

I cannot figure out how to do a guitar solo. Like I understand scales but I don’t see how that fits when I do a scale. It just sounds like nothing. I don’t understand how someone’s coming up with a great guitar solo out of that. Is there any advice that would give me?

Like for example, how would I create a guitar solo in the key of E Major?

Cassette tape Charley

Got the whole trilogy on cassette today. Bet it sounds pretty cool. Anyone else like to get stuff on tape as well as vinyl?
