About to get my first gun/Shotgun for deer (and someday) Turkey Hunting

Ahoy people of Reddit! Now that I don’t drink anymore and am slightly more responsible with all aspects of my life I’m extending my outdoorsmanship from just fishing into hunting after a buck t-boned my car and almost ripped my head off.
I’m an old school kinda guy, no synthetic and want something that isn’t a one trick pony. Where Id be hunting mostly, only allows archery and slugs (no rifle or buckshot). I want to get a bow as well but feel like I might as well get the bow and shotgun at the same time (buy two at once, cry once?) then spend the winter honing before I decide to try to take a life with it probably season after this.
I’m thinkin the Mossberg 500 retrograde with its 18.5 stock barrel. I know I could get something more inexpensive but I don’t mind paying another 90 for the corncob. And the old guy at Cabelas duped me into getting their credit card last summer so I might as well use it there. I like the shorter barrel because it would be mostly short range and in the dense scrub. I also barely know what I’m talking about so experts please let me know what ya think. Would I neeed a different barrel for Turkey? It would definitely be used mostly for deer and that’s the priority.
Also would any sort of sights be helpful or compatible with the short barrel? What I’ve heard is the 12gauge and a shorter barrel the recoil is unforgiving on such things. I want to keep it classic but efficient so no batteries or fancy sights but want to add a little handicap at first maybe because I’m new to the game. And to reiterate I definitely won’t shoot anything until I’m sure if my abilities with the bow and gun. Ok that’s the rant, let me know what ya guys think! Thank you all, always.
