2017 Prius Puttering

Good morning, I have a 2016 Prius 4 with 132,000 miles on it.

Apologies for the poor description since I’m not very mechanically inclined. Turned the car on this morning and it began to putter only for the first mile or so on the road with a blinking check engine light. When I was bringing the car back home when noticed. The car stopped puttering and drove perfectly fine, no check engine light. Didn’t see any temp warnings on the dash. The only other noticeable thing was the car temporarily smelled like a skunk (not sure if this was coincidence or a legitimate part of the issue). This is the second time I’ve had this in the past week and I’m not sure where to start looking. Plan to check the engine coils, and will be dropping by an auto zone for a quick scan. Where else should I be checking and or looking to try and find the problem. Thanks so much.

Edit: Fat fingered the year on the title. It is a 2016 not a 2017
