Walked Out of dealership after three hours

LE 2023 48k miles one lease owner, squeaky clean CarFax, they don't know about the damage. I ran my new OBD2 reader and luved the high percentage left on the big battery. I tested inspected, drove and vibed until I felt like I was ready.

I had a near yelling talk about numbers with a huge Persian manager for over an hour. We came to a price that was good for me but by that time my minor doubts about the undisclosed damage next to a rear wheel were compounding with the lies that the guy was attempting, including about when the damage happened, in support of his contention that the tech inside the wheel was absolutely not damaged, that his Inspectors would not have allowed it to be sold. I have seen multiple posts around the web saying to stay away from buying any prius that *may* have received a blow to the rear wheel.

The manager promised that I could still get my price of 21k plus tax and reasonable paperwork fees tomorrow if it's not gone. They want an as-is sale. Because the CARS act does not kick in for a few months from now it looks like California will not back me up if I buy it and find something damaged the next day. Should I walk?

Lack of Spare is a sick joke

Was highway driving a 2026 with less than 1800 miles on it today when I was alerted to a flat tire. The flat tire kit did nothing but leave a white liquid all over the ground.

Stranded for 2 hours in the middle of nowhere is worth .5 mpg or whatever. What a dumb and anti-driver decision by Toyota.

A Full Bladder

With 2 bars on the gauge, I filled the tank of my 2005 yesterday with 6.8 gallons of gas. Woohoo! I hate hot weather, but not in this case! Winter temps only let me put in 3.5-4.5 gallons at fill-up.

As the display on the pump zoomed past 6 gallons, I admit I worried auto shutoff could be broken for a nanosecond ;)

Prius 3 interior lights

Is there any way to have the interior lights switch off automatically when the car is off and locked?

If a reading light is accidentally left on it will drain the 12v battery completely.

3rd gen Prius 2009. 196,900 kilometers.

Sodium Battery Cells

Today was a big achievement. Swapped out my old hybrid battery and placed in a new sodium cell battery I ordered from Green Bean. They could not get an installer to me so I did it myself (and help from my friend and ChrisFix). This is a 2007 Prius with about 230k miles.
Does anyone know if there is suppose to be venting tubes on the sodium cells? It did not have any. I was hesitant to place my old venting tubes into the new cells as it did not have any way to attach it to. Any one have a similar experience?

Update: My car is driving normal again! When the battery was starting to fail, my car was constantly on limp mode and i could barely get up to 15m/h. Now with the new battery in, it accelerates normally and feels smoother than before!

I did not place my old venting tubes in as google said it doesn't need it. Phew!

15 vs 17" wheels?

Just got a 2013 Prius 5 with the 17" wheels, replacing my 2 that had 15" wheels. Is it crazy to put the 15s onto the "new" car? I use my car for some offroad shenanigans and I'm worried about the thinner sidewalls on rougher roads (plus want to keep my studded snow tires) pros/cons one vs the other?

I'm part of the Prius Team! Just got mine on Sunday.

I went for a 2026 Prius Limited. Most of the non Plug-In Prius were sold out in my area. Silver and Red were my top choice for colors.

Did someone steal my catalytic converter

The 2015 Prius basic sedan/hatchback been making a scrapping sound yesterday night so I checked it this morning and the engine idle when put in drive w/ engine on was SUPER LOUD and grumbly like a bad muffler job. I looked underneath and I feel like there's this big open space and I can see a pipe that's been cut diagonally? Please advise did I just hit road debris, or did someone steal my catalytic converter?

Help buying first car

I am looking to buy my first car, I have over 5k saved so I could buy this one in full. The car fax is clean and the battery was replaced in 2013. Would it be a good idea to buy it and have money saved to replace the battery again at some point? I am disabled and low income so I need a car that’s gonna last a long time with no serious issues.

Why Ignition Mode Is the Wrong Way to Clean Modern Electronic Throttles

Many YouTube videos, forums, AI answers, and repair articles claim you must put newer vehicles into ignition mode to clean the throttle body. On many modern vehicles — especially hybrids like the Toyota Prius — this advice can quickly drain the 12V battery because the hybrid charging system is not active unless the vehicle is in READY mode.

In my case, ignition mode drained the battery completely, and the electronic throttle still would not respond to the gas pedal. The throttle plate never moved electronically, making the entire process pointless. If you put the vehicle into maintenance mode instead, the engine and hybrid system may start running, creating another unnecessary complication for a basic throttle cleaning job.

The safer and simpler method is:

  • Turn the vehicle completely OFF
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal for extra safety
  • Remove the intake hose
  • Gently move the throttle plate manually by hand
  • Clean the throttle body using a microfiber cloth and throttle body cleaner

Nothing bad happens by manually moving the throttle plate carefully with the vehicle powered off. This is a common real-world technician method that avoids:

  • unnecessary battery drain,
  • warning lights,
  • hybrid startup complications,
  • and electronic throttle confusion.

Many online repair articles are written for SEO clicks rather than practical DIY repair accuracy. They often repeat the same copy-paste instructions without considering how hybrid systems actually behave in real-world conditions.

For most modern electronic throttle bodies:

  • Vehicle OFF is safest
  • Disconnect negative battery terminal if preferred
  • No ignition mode required
  • No maintenance mode required
  • No unnecessary battery drain
  • No hybrid system complications

This method worked correctly on a 2022 Toyota Prius after ignition mode completely discharged the 12V battery without even opening the throttle electronically.

2009 Prius leaking red fluid from rear passenger side

2009 Prius with 214,000 miles on it. Leaking this red fluid behind the rear passenger side tire. Fluid seemed pretty watery- there was a 10 minute difference between the first 2 photos and you can see it ran a lot. I included an action shot of where it’s dripping from- I’m not sure what the part is but it’s obviously super rusted through.. any ideas?

Prius may be nearing the end...

I've saved my 2007 Prius from being scrapped so many times...I've replaced every major part except the brake actuator. At 210,000 miles, the "optimistic me" says that if I replace the actuator, there's not much that go wrong at this point except a head gasket failure. "Realistic me" says that sounds nice but isn't reality. I've got some rust spots but they're not preventing it from passing inspection. I drive it heavily on road trips, around 10-12k / month.

I'm starting to put away money for a replacement car, whenever that time may come. I'm not sure a $4k actuator replacement is worth the investment (although if it bought me four more years, that comes out to $85/month).

I'm starting to think ahead to: Prius, RAV4 Hybrid, or Subaru Crosstrek (maybe Forester) Hybrid. Leery of the Subaru transmission problems.

What are your thoughts about all this?

Anyone seen my beloved first car on the west coast?

Last April after a series of bizarre circumstances, I sold my silver 2007 Prius with 150K miles to a man from Hungary who was looking to drive from Boston to Seattle and then fly home. It was the perfect car, a 6-change CD player, leather seats, JBL sound system, very well taken care of. I’m posting to see if anyone in Seattle or really anywhere in the upper west coast may have bought this car. Some nights I get sad thinking she may have ended up in a scrap yard. I can provide VIN number if helpful.

ETA: not looking to buy this car back, just curious how she’s doing out there :’)

EGR Coolant Leak

My 2010 Prius with 211k miles. Just cleaned EGR and intake manifold. After putting everything together and driving it around for about 70 miles. I noticed my coolant level getting lower. The car starts up smooth every morning. Then I noticed this. Hoses are all dry. Is it possible it’s leaking into exhaust chamber?

2008 prius briefly lights red triangle when turning on

As the title says, my prius 2008 (226k miles) briefly lights the red triangle when turning the car on, it does it randomly. I went to auto zone to run the scanner and see a possible fault, but there are no errors coming out. I noticed if the lights and ac are ON, the car won't fully start until turned off... Is it my 12v battery?

Anyone else had issues with their 2008 Prius having a hard time stopping?

EDIT TO ADD:

  1. This is my first Prius and I’ve only had it about a year.
  2. The way the road it happened on is, there’s a slight curve before that red light and you can’t see it until you reach a certain point and when I saw the light I hit the brake so I was unaware another car was ahead of me until then.
  3. I was not driving distracted.
  4. The other person is okay! Their car took a lot less damage as it was bigger than mine and a more sturdy SUV.
  5. When I say I felt like I have had some times that felt harder to stop, the best way I can describe it is that when I hit the brake I would notice it not being normal and having to hit it harder but it has never not stopped nor has it been exactly like this. It has also only happened maybe 3 other times and it’s been a while and those times had a good bit of time between them.
  6. Please only offer advice/comments if you’re going to help answer my question, give any other ideas as to what could’ve happened, or be polite. I didn’t ask for rude comments. I was there, I was petal to the metal mashing the brake and by the time I realized it wasn’t letting up I couldn’t do anything, I tried. I am aware as a driver it is my responsibility to make sure my car is good. I’m not talking to the ones who have politely said this, I agree with you and it 100% is!
  7. I was going to ask about it later this week when I was supposed to have my headlights replaced by someone who specifically works on Prius’s and has driven them for years. I was going to ask if that is something known to happen or what could be checked.

I had a wreck this past Friday because my car wouldn’t stop and I was desperately trying to get it to. There have been a few times where I felt like the car had a hard time stopping at either stop signs or red lights but it hasn’t been happening like every time or super consistent. Like it’ll happen a couple of times and then not happen for a bit so I haven’t thought a whole lot about it but I’m also consistently pretty busy and raging ADHD so by the time one thought has completed in my head, 14 more are also going through it at the same time so my brain is constantly overloaded. 🤦🏼‍♀️ So anyways, has anyone else had this issue or felt like it? There weren’t any lights on my dash.

Mine is a 2008 with mileage a little over 100k.

What’s causing this noise?

Violent rattling/shaking noise on start up occasionally. Is it a blown head gasket?

Noise happens on Start up usually after not driving the car that much, goes away quickly but it doesn’t sound good
