New Rules

Hey all, I'm slowly making little adjustments as I settle in as the mod. Happily this sub doesn't require much moderative intervention, it's a happy place. 🙂

I've written up some rules that I think are a good starting point (since previously there weren't any at all). If you're so inclined, please take a minute to read through them and let me know if you have any thoughts. The only two that I think are going to have much of an impact on things here are:

  • ID requests require a link to an observation on iNat. This isn't /r/whatisthisbug or /r/whatisthisplant, it's a sub specific to iNat so posts should be related to iNat. Personally I don't think that ID requests make sense here at all, but I'm not sure they're actually problematic.

  • No self-promotion. In short, this is essentially an effort to combat spam. It's very easy to drop a low-effort post promoting a low-effort smartphone app or something (this isn't uncommon in this sub). This sub shouldn't be a revenue driver for anyone. If you're here trying to make money, or trying to drive clicks, or trying to increase downloads, you're in the wrong place. We already have a website and an app* that we like, iNaturalist. We don't need a different one

^*Yes, ^I ^know ^the ^new ^app ^is ^terrible

These rules are active starting now (May 19,2026). Posts made before these go up can stay, but going forward these rules are active. Also, I'm an old.reddit user. If something isn't displaying correctly on one of the (awful and cluttered) newer UIs, please let me know. I think I've gotten it right but I wouldn't mind a second set of eyes looking it over.

So yeah, that's about it. If you think I forgot a rule that we should have, or that I'm way off base on one of these, let me know. I'm happy to reconsider.

Any local business where I can get a custom prehung door?

Getting the run around from Home Depot (surprise surprise). No progress on my order, no one can tell me when it'll be ready, when I should expect it delivered, etc etc.

Nothing fancy, I need a standard, paint grade, flush 80x30 solid core interior door. The sooner I can get the job done the better, but I don't think anyone has solid core prehung doors on the shelf. I'm ready to be done with HD and cancel my order, just need to find a better (and hopefully faster) source.

Any recommendations are appreciated.

Replacing a transformer for halogen lights with one for LEDs?

Disclaimer: I know very little about household A/C wiring.

tl;dr: I think the transformer that powers some halogen kitchen lighting is bad and want to make sure I replace it with the right one to power equivalent LEDs.

Long version: The previous owner of my house installed a set of 4 G4 halogen lights over the kitchen counter. The lights started to turn off by themselves, sometimes after just a few minutes, sometimes longer, and it would require flipping the switch to get them back on again. After a while they started to go off more quickly and sometimes require multiple flips of the switch to get them back (this is a pain in the ass if you're cooking and have your hands covered with chicken innards or something). And then one of the bulbs burnt out.

So I replaced them all with equivalent G4 base LED bulbs, hoping that something was just overheating somewhere and the reduced wattage would "fix" the issue. It didn't. The lights still turn off after a few minutes, and they now flicker.

I dug around and found the transformer, which I'm guessing is the problem (WAC Lighting EN-12150-R-AR). My preference would be to keep the LEDs rather than go back to halogen, do I need a different transformer (I'm guessing the 50W minimum is an issue with the LEDs and probably causing the flickering)? If I go back to halogen bulbs is there any reason not to use a comparable transformer from a different brand? Anything else I should know? Am I barking up the wrong tree altogether?
