A few weeks ago, I logged into my WS account and noticed some unusual activity that had all happened within the span of 20 minutes:
- someone opened a Crypto account
- Transferred cash (a few thousands) from my non-registered margin + RRSP to the crypto account
- Bought BTC
- Crypto sent the BTC away
All the activities above were done at around ~9:40 and the last one done at ~9:55
I called WS when I found out at noon and had my account frozen for ~2 weeks while they investigated
They said that because there were nothing suspicious about the logins (done from the usual device i.e. my PC and phone), there was nothing they could do. I'll file a police report but I don't expect much to happen.
FYI I didn't have 2FA (receive a text when logging via the app but could login instantly on PC) so that's on me. I also changed all my passwords and enabled 2FA after my account was unfrozen.
It's quite disappointing that after all the time spent calling equifax/transunion to put a fraud alert on my account and with WS, just to lose money (on top of RRSP withdrawal increasing my taxable income)
I've seen a lot of cc unauthorized transactions in this subreddit but not much on the actual account, I'm curious if anyone else has experienced this and what the final outcome was?
