Is it possible to play tournament with more than 2 players using a custom template or something, or does this require modding?

I am planning to give multiplayer a try with 3 players during the weekend, and I have no idea how to balance it for that player count. I am a complete beginner, but to me it seems like the classic mode just means that the first two players to fight are going to lose, since the last player should be able to easily win against the weakened non-eliminated player.

Any idea what to do? Or maybe this game just isn't meant for pvp with more than 2 players.
