A simple but effective breathing exercise to calm down in 5 minutes
I've been using box breathing lately and it’s honestly one of the simplest things that actually helps me calm down quickly.
The idea is very basic: your breathing affects your physiology. So when you slow down your breathing and follow a steady rhythm, your body gradually starts to relax too.
Box breathing is split into 4 phases:
Inhale → hold → exhale → hold
Doing this for around 5 minutes is usually enough for me to feel calmer, more relaxed and less overwhelmed. Sometimes I do it before sleep too and 5-7 minutes is usually enough to get into a more peaceful state.
I use an app called box breathing - breathcode, but honestly, you can use any app or just a simple timer. The most important part is getting into the rhythm and staying with it for a few minutes.
