Good winter (UK) hiking mid layer jacket?

Hello all,

I'm currently looking into getting a suitable mid layer to use for winter hiking.

Ideally something versatile enough so that its warm enough for use in winter as a mid layer but can double up as an outer layer in milder seasons Autumn and spring.

Have narrowed it down currently to the Rab Xenair Alpine light or the Mountain Equipment Switch Pro Hooded Men's Jacket.

Has anyone used either and has any thoughts? Or if anyone has any other potential suggestions for something suitable, that would be appreciated too.

Existing layering system looks like this for context;

Base: Rab force SS long sleeve t-shirt

Mid: TBC

Outer: Mountain Equipment Lhotse jacket

Static warmth layer: Patagonia DAS Parker

Thanks.

Any recommendations for a suitable insulation layer for hikes in Scottish winter

Hello, I'm looking to get an insulated jacket that I can wear beneath my ME Lhotse jacket at summit stops. Or in event of an emergency. I'm looking for something that is warm enough for that but also light/packable enough without it taking up the majority of the room in my Osprey Kestrel 38L backpack or it being daft heavy. Willing to spend up to c£300. Anything beyond is out of my range.

My current layering system is;

Base- Rab long sleeve t-shirt

Mid- Patagonia R1 air

Shell- ME Lhotse

If anyone had any suggestions for what they use and would recommend for this sort of use, it would be greatly appreciated.

Struggling with 'The Teachers Pet' podcast

I'm quite surprised at this, as generally I really enjoy deep dives and don't mind a bit of a slow burn, whether it's a podcast, film or a book. I'd say I prefer it to shorter form ones.

With that said, I'm sincerely struggling with TTP. I've just finished episode 7. I couldn't believe my eyes when I checked how many episodes were left and seen there were like another 9. 7 hours in and all I find are different witnesses endlessly describing the same thing over and over again. IE, Lyn was lovely and loved her husband and kids, Chris was awful, him and his brother thick as thieves and the sexist, abusive behaviour enabled by the culture of the Northern beaches at the time. Not much else at all has been established other than this.

I know the ultimate outcome and completely understand the importance the podcast played in putting public pressure for it to be re-investigated and how respectful it is to both Lyn and allowing her friends and people who knew her to speak their piece now, having feelings guilt over not saying anything back in the 80s.

But my GOD is it repetitive and I don't think I've got another 9 episodes in me of it. Can see the podcast is generally revered, but surely there are others that have massively struggled with finishing it as well?

I can only think it was easier when it was being released on a weekly basis in 2018 and people were invested in seeing how the story panned out at the time, as opposed to binging it which is proving to be a slog for me.

Looking for Thailand recommendations!

Hi all,

Myself and the Mrs (both early 30s) are heading to Thailand for 2 weeks in January 27.

Our route/schedule is not determined at all yet, other than we fly into Bangkok and fly home from Phuket. I'm keen to know if anyone has ever been that has any recommendations or suggestions. This can be a specific location, activity, excursion or absolutely anything so long as if they would do it again if they went back and would recommend it to their friends/family.

Any suggestions genuinely appreciated, thanks.

Just finished the Jaws novel. Some thoughts / comparison with the movie

- overall surprised at how much I enjoyed it, although the film is definitely better.

- general consensus is that all the characters are miserable and unlikable. Not sure I fully agree. Ellen is due to her depression and she's characterised differently because of it, Hooper has the affair plot thrown in so people will dislike him for that too. But I thought movie Quint was just as standoffish and short as in the book. I seen Brody as fairly brave and committed in the book, even with the obvious paranoia in regarding his suspected wife's affair.

- enjoyed the hostile dynamic between Brody and Hooper that the affair causes

- thought the ending was extremely extremely abrupt and nowhere near as good as the films. To have a full book on Brody's inner thoughts, to then not have any described whatsoever at the shark dying with him inches from death. No jubilance, PTSD, shock? Think a trick was missed there.

- the sharks death was strangely boring, albeit more realistic

- don't think the mafia subplot was necessary at all. The pressure to keep the beaches open for Amity to survive financially would likely have made enough sense on its own, without the mafia related stuff.

- didn't mind the Ellen Brody affair sections, although don't think they should have taken up as much time/overall pages as they did as it definitely isn't as good as the main shark plot.

- Quints death not as good as the movies. Likely this way due to the captain Ahab he is clearly based on.

- the movie adds in so many good bits that the book doesn't have. Examples: shark prank scene, comparing scars, Quints Indianapolis speech, the three barrels going under to highlight how out of the ordinary powerful this particular shark is.

- for tension and higher stakes, much prefer in the movie how they stay out overnight rather than head back in each day. Think it helps to create a much more vulnerable, isolated situation for the characters rather than them returning home each day
