What’s a social “rule” that everyone seems to follow, but you’ve never fully understood why, or you find it pointless?

I hate the “we should totally hang out sometime!” thing. People say it with full sincerity, everyone smiles, and then nobody follows up. I never know if I’m supposed to take it literally and suggest a date, or if it’s just a polite way of ending a conversation.
