Giovanni Pico Della Mirandola
He's not really known as a mystic more then he was known as an Italian Renaissance Philosopher. Giovanni Pico Della Mirandola was an Italian Renaissance philosopher who studied a wide variety of religions and traditions. His most famous works are the "Oration on the Dignity of Man" and his 900 theses.
He was condemned as heretical in 1486 by Pope Innocent VIII, but was later absolved of this status in in 1492 by Pope Alexander VI.
He was seen as dangerous because he included magic and non-Christian esoteric traditions in his theses. Most notably, he wrote about the Kabbalah, a Jewish mystic school of thought that often makes people a little tense just by hearing its name. He used it to support Christian doctrine and gave it a new spelling "Cabala" to differentiate it from its Jewish roots.
He also used many Islamic texts and teachings to help him along with more classical works from antiquity. Along with that, even older traditions like Zoroastrianism and Hermeticism.
This is a very brief outline of Pico Della serving as an introduction to those who are not familiar with his work and ideas.
For those who have read his works or have engaged with traditions like Kabbalah, do you think his theses have significance in the more mystical aspects of Christianity or are they more philisophical and theological in nature?
