If you're getting back into Commander, don't try to catch up on everything first

If you're getting back into Commander after being away for a while, I think one of the easiest mistakes is assuming you need to catch up on everything before you can enjoy it again.

That turns re-entry into homework fast.

I think it gets easier once you stop asking, "How do I catch up on all of Commander?" and start asking, "What kind of return am I actually trying to make?"

For me, there are basically three cleaner ways back in:

  • revive an old deck
  • do a focused deep dive
  • use a precon as a restart button

And I think the two biggest filters are:

  • do you already have a deck you actually want to play again?
  • how often are you realistically going to play?

Because if you are only going to play occasionally, it probably does not make sense to turn your return into a giant research project.

I think a lot of Commander re-entry gets easier when the goal stops being "fully caught up" and becomes "back to playing with the least unnecessary friction."

Most people probably do not need the smartest return path.
They just need one that makes them actually want to play again.

Curious how other people handled it.
What worked better for you:

  • old deck
  • focused catch-up
  • precon restart
  • something else
