- I bought a house at my duty station in 2023 for $260k with a 5.5% VA loan and have rented rooms to my roommates since then. Although I’ve certainly enjoyed that, I’ve certainly had to make repairs and such to it over time that I would not have paid for if I rented.
- I plan on renting/ living in base housing for the rest of my 12 years in the military, and plan on renting this out for my mortgage payment the remainder of my time in the military, and attempting to pay it off before retiring.
- Overall, it will not be a good investment compared to adding $ to my Charles Schwab account, but it adds diversity to my retirement and I like owning something.
- I recommend others do not buy a home in the military until you plan on staying somewhere for 10 years plus.
