Finding their constant need for depth grating
I miss CMBC but still listen to GN. However,
I feel like this year they’ve been trying a lot harder to sound academic or intellectual, and sometimes it feels like they’re extrapolating a level of depth or meaning from things where there maybe isn’t that much there.
I think it’s a broader podcasting trend rather than something specific to them or to female podcasters — there seems to be a style of podcasting now where everything has to become a deeper cultural analysis or have some kind of intellectual takeaway. I actually think it’s fine to just talk about pop culture at face value sometimes! Not everything needs to be analysed to death. Also reminds me of the criticism Emma Chamberlain caught for intellectualising (if that is a word) her content - people said she would benefit from going to college.
I do wonder if they’ve been influenced by podcasts like Shameless and Diabolical Lies, which I think lean more into that style, but I don’t mean that as a criticism of female podcasters generally. It’s just not really the direction I enjoy as much.
And I really wish they’d stop talking about tech and AI so much.
