Japanese Maple Health

Our Japanese Maple appears to me to be quite robust and healthy overall, but all the lichen growth and occluded bark at the base gives me some concerns. Is it common for Japanese Maples to acquire all that moss and lichen on the bark? No other trees in my yard have this occurring.
