Diagnosing low idle RPM

For context I own a 1987 300E

Recently I changed out the plugs and distributor cap on my M103, aswell as the OVP Relay

And today will also change the ignition cables

Additionally I cleaned out the ICV with Carb cleaner

I also wanted to change out the rotor but seems like previous owner seized the Allen heads on it so that will be postponed

Previously I needed to give the car a little gas everytime I started it, now I only need to do it very rarely.

How ever I’m still struggling with low RPM at idle, oftentimes it sits at a solid ~600 in Park and <400 in reverse and drive

However if I start turning the wheel, especially if I turn it all the way, the car will stall.

Doing a smoke test tomorrow.

I was curious what might be the cause of such a thing.

Any ideas or recommendations is greatly appreciated.

Edit: problem seems solved, change ignition cables and no longer happening, but now I have a new issue haha

Hood release tab

I pulled the tab that pops out the grille and unlike it ever did before, it snapped right out.

I found the part on FCPeuro for pretty cheap (5-10 dollars)

But I’m curious if anyone knows a trick to open the hood besides just reaching in through the grille with really thin pliers, and risking damaging the grille.

Thanks!

Mechanic in NYC

Was curious if anyone in the NYC area had pleasant experiences/recommendations with mechanics.

I have a 1987 300E that runs rough and half the time needs some gas to get it started.

Was quoted really high at a shop I went to. They wanted to replace rotors, caps, spark plugs, and ignition cables, as well as the radiator. The car doesn’t feel like it overheats, I’ve sat in some wicked traffic this summer and it hasn’t gone above 100.

Before I spend a few thousand dollars to fix it, I was curious if anyone had a spot they can vouch for that is familiar with these older cars and can save me an arm and a leg with the bill.

For context, was quoted 3000 for that, and was quoted another 2000 for a power steering pump replacement with a high pressure power steering. However I believe the latter is less pressing the former.

I come humbly and accept I may be wrong and this is just a reality.

(Prices includ parts)

Deal breaker?

Never even owned a car so not sure whats too much rust. I’m looking to get a Coup W123, however not sure if these spots would make the car a deal breaker. Would it still be worth checking out in person?
