SOLUTION: How to MIDI map the faders on APC mini mk2 in Ableton Live 12
Unlike the APC Mini mk1, the mk2 faders are hard-coded to control track volume and can't be MIDI mapped. Midi mapping these faders is essential functionality in my studio and I was about to return the MK2 until I found this solution.
This mod based on the work from u/Tough_Ad_236 frees them up by creating a new control surface choice in Ableton using a modified script file.
The trade-off is the faders no longer control volume when set to volume mode. However Everything else - pads, buttons, pan/send/device fader modes - works as normal.
The below files work for Live version 12.2.7 at time of posting. But the link is direct from my personal backup - so they should continue to be updated for each version of live and work until I stop needing them. Even if I forget to come update this post, give them a go.
You can find the files here.
Installation:
Make sure Ableton Live is closed, then find the scripts folder
C:\ProgramData\Ableton\Live 12 Suite\Resources\MIDI Remote Scripts
Copy the new folder to MIDI Remote Scripts
Copy the entire APC_Mini_MK2_MIDIMAP folder into the MIDI Remote Scripts folder and hit f5 to refresh the folder
You should now see both the original APC_mini_mk2 folder next to your new APC_Mini_MK2_MIDIMAP folder.
Load it in Ableton
- Open Ableton Live
- Go to Settings > Link/Tempo/MIDI
- Select
APC Mini MK2 MIDIMAPfrom the Control Surface dropdown and assign your input and output ports to APC mini mk2 - Set the fader mode to volume on the APC mini
- Press Ctrl+M to enter MIDI Map Mode
- Click a parameter, move a fader and it should now map correctly.
Hope this helps!
