Why do the rows keep getting longer but stitch count stays the same? Pocket shawl project worked in rows

It’s a (sc, dk) sk* pattern worked in rows, and I turn and chain at the end. The first row was 14.5 in and now the last row I did was 16 in!!

The stitch count stays the same! Every row is 39 stitches but the length of the row increases every time! What am I doing wrong?
I’ve included a screen shot of the pattern I’m using

Please help!
